Blood Pressure Kit TypesFinger Pressure Monitors and Wrist Pressure Monitors are not recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), because many are too sensitive to the person’s body position. If you are holding your finger or wrist in the wrong position, you may get a “wrong” blood pressure reading. An Automatic Cuff Blood Pressure Cuff may be the best buy and the easiest to use. The main feature you need to insure is the cuff is the right size. Many of these types of blood pressure kits come with a cuff of one size fits all — yet if you have an extremely large upper arm or an extremely small one (like a child’s), you may have to make sure the cuff will adjust to right diameter of your upper arm. The Automatic Cuff Blood Pressure Kit usually comes with a cuff that you adjust to fit on your upper left arm. Positioning is critical in getting the proper reading, so you will need to review the instructions. Usually there is a line from the cuff to the actual monitor where there is a “start” button. Once you have the cuff positioned correctly on your arm, have your arm laying correctly on a surface, you then hit the start button. The blood pressure kit then automatically tightens the cuff on your arm and begins “reading” your blood pressure. |
Commercial Blood Pressure Kit
Another type of blood pressure kit that is used predominately in doctor’s offices, and prior to the automatic kits, utilized a cuff with a line to a bulb and a line to a number device. The cuff is placed on the upper arm, then the bulb is pumped, which in turn tightens the cuff on the arm. A stethoscope is placed usually in the crook of the arm with the cuff and a nurse or doctor (person who will be reading your blood pressure) will listen to your heartbeat & read the number device, while releasing the pressure of the cuff using a release mechanism on the bulb.
The above type of blood pressure kit would be very difficult to use at home on your own.
When buying a device such as a blood pressure monitor or machine, I usually wish to read reviews of the bestselling products. There are a number of sites that offer reviews and very low prices as well.
